Merit School of Music is seeking a flute instructor to teach Private Lessons through our Merit Music in Communities (MMIC) Program in addition to a group class through our Instrumental & Vocal Music (IVM) Program at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. Students in the MMIC program are comprised of beginning through advanced level in grades 4th – 8th. Students in the IVM Program are beginner to intermediate level in grades 4th – 9th. Qualified candidates may also be considered to teach in Merit’s on-site Private Lesson Program.
Since its founding in 1979, Merit School of Music has successfully motivated and inspired over 50,000 young people with high-quality music instruction. The School’s broad-ranging comprehensive curriculum, extensive level of financial aid, sense of community and the standard of excellence set forth by the faculty and students are major components of its success.
Merit offers a multi-leveled, structured curriculum in a college preparatory environment. Programs take place at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop and at nearly 30 locations in neighborhoods across the City. Instruction is offered to approximately 5,000 students of all ages, from infants to adults, and from beginners to the Juilliard-bound by over 150 accomplished faculty members. Merit has an annual operating budget of $6 million, of which nearly half is supported by contributed revenue.

The Flute Instructor reports to the Band Program Director.
Responsibilities of Flute Instructor include, but are not limited to:
Delivering high-quality instruction to students in weekly lessons or classes
Communicating with corresponding band directors to determine individual student needs and goals
Providing Merit staff with student recommendations for additional Merit programming
Participation in Merit faculty meetings and/or department meetings
Timely correspondence with Merit staff and students/families
Other projects as assigned
The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:
Proven success teaching flute students at various skill levels from beginner through advanced
Strong classroom management skills
Ability to collaborate and work well with colleagues and administrators
Punctual, professional, and collegial
Flexible and adaptive disposition
A high level of personal musicianship
Spanish language skills a plus
Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience/training
Private Lessons taking place at Carson Elementary (5516 S Maplewood) will occur Monday – Friday between 1:00 – 6:00pm, from October 9 – May 24 and will average 8-10 hours per week.
Group classes taking place at Merit’s Joy Faith Knapp Music Center will take place on Tuesdays between 6:00 – 7:00pm, from October 2 – May 14.
Private Lessons taking place at Merit’s Joy Faith Knapp Music Center are scheduled based on student-teacher availability.
Compensation is $44.00 per hour for Private Lessons; $49.00 per hour for Group Classes
