Newcity Stage is currently accepting applications for Contributing Writers
Mission Statement: Newcity Stage believes that it’s the critic’s responsibility to advocate for high quality, inclusive theater for all Chicagoans.
Job Description: A Newcity Stage Contributing Writer is responsible for regularly contributing to the critical output of the publication. A Contributing Writer (CW) will be expected to review at least one show and pitch at least one feature (Stage Section or Front of Book) idea every month. A CW will also be required to participate in idea generation and content creation for Newcity’s annual Best of Chicago and Players 50 issues as well as any other special editions.
Deadlines: Newcity is a print and online publication and our deadlines reflect the distinct requirements of both mediums. Reviews are published online-only and are due by noon the day following the performance attended. Stage Section features are published in print and online and are due six weeks ahead of the Street Date for the issue in which it will be published. Front of Book features are also published in print and online and are due eight weeks ahead of the Street Date. Deadlines for Online-Only Features will be set by your editor on the basis of the timeliness of the content.
Word Counts: Reviews are between 350-500 words. Stage Section features are roughly 1200 words. Front of Book feature word counts will be set up by the editor-in-chief but are usually at least 2000 words.
Payment: The CW role is a freelance position paid on the basis of work completed. Compensation for reviews is $15 per piece. Payment for Features ranges between $20 – $100 depending on length and whether they are a Section Feature or Front of Book feature. Payments are made on a rolling basis, typically once several reviews and features have been filed.
